Second-year law student Eric Huston has been named winner of the UW Law School's Legal Research & Writing Best Brief Award for 2006 after a selection process that included review of the submitted briefs by leading Wisconsin practitioners and UW law professors. Huston's work, on the topic of wrongful discharge, was selected as the most outstanding of 21 submitted briefs.
The Legal Writing faculty also congratulated the four finalists: Kate Botham, Sarah Germonprez, Daniel Kuehn, and Chris Watson, all second-year students.
The process leading to Huston's selection included three separate evaluation stages. First, the teacher from each Legal Research and Writing section selected the best brief written in that section. These briefs were then reviewed and ranked by three prominent Wisconsin lawyers.
The five briefs receiving the highest overall rankings from the practitioners were then reviewed independently by UW law professors Allison Christians, Arthur McEvoy, and David Schwartz. The best brief was determined based on their cumulative rankings.
Huston, a native of Menasha, Wisconsin, earned his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from UW-Madison, and went on to earn an M.B.A degree in finance and accounting from the University of Michigan before returning to his home state for law school.
