During the week of February 19 – the annual Mardi Gras season in New Orleans --UW law students participating in the Student Hurricane Network (SHN) will host several events to raise funds for New Orleans hurricane relief and to increase awareness of the continuing state of disarray on the Gulf Coast.
The week’s events will include screenings of Spike Lee’s documentary When the Levees Broke, a Cajun-style food sale fundraiser, and a coffee & donuts discussion, and a brown-bag lunch talk.
This past winter, nine UW Law School students traveled to New Orleans to volunteer for the SHN, a national coalition of law students working for justice in the Gulf Coast area. This was the third time a group of UW law students traveled to the area since the winter break of 2005. Currently, more than 30 law students are planning to return to the area to help the efforts of the SHN over their spring break in April 2007.
-- On Monday, Feb. 19, a brown-bag lunch from noon to 1 p.m. will feature UW Law School Professor Peter Carstensen discussing insurance and other issues affecting the Gulf area after Hurricane Katrina. (Room to be announced.)
-- On Tuesday, Feb. 20 (Fat Tuesday) from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., a Cajun meal will be sold in the Law School atrium. Included on the menu will be jambalaya, macaroni & cheese, cornbread, sweet tea, and pie.
-- When the Levees Broke will be shown on two successive evenings at 6 p.m.: Parts I and II on Tuesday, Feb. 20, and Parts III, IV and V on Wednesday, Feb. 21. Admission is free. The room for the screenings will be announced at a later date.
-- On Wednesday, Feb. 21, SHN will host a Coffee & Donuts event at 9 a.m. in Lubar Commons (Room 7200), when students will speak about their experiences working with SHN.
