Two law students from the University of Wisconsin Law School’s Consumer Law Clinic, Jen Marques 2L and Hugo Rojas 3L, presented a talk on consumer rights at Centro Hispano of Dane County on October 9, 2007, as part of Money Smart Week.

Their presentation, which they delivered in Spanish, covered a range of issues relating to consumer rights, including credit and debt, fraud, and credit reports.

Money Smart Week, sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions, was designed to heighten the financial literacy of Wisconsin consumers through a variety of programs sponsored by community organizations and other entities throughout the State, all building consumers' financial knowledge so they can deal with money more quickly, confidently and shrewdly. The Consumer Clinic program focused on the kinds of predatory lending practices that frequently target low-income and Latino consumers.

"This program is another way in which UW Law School students are bringing their knowledge of the law into the community and helping consumers fend for themselves in an increasingly complex financial services market," said Professor Steve Meili, director of the Consumer Law Clinic. "This is what the Wisconsin Idea is all about."
