University of Wisconsin Law School graduate Sheldon B. Lubar ‘53 and his wife Marianne Lubar have received the highest honor conferred by the Wisconsin Alumni Association, the Distinguished Alumni Award.
Sheldon Lubar’s name is known to many law students, present and past, through his funding of Lubar Commons, the Law School’s seventh-floor faculty library and reception venue.
The Lubars, who have supported higher education in Wisconsin for more than a decade, are among seven UW-Madison alumni who will be honored at the 72nd Annual Distinguished Alumni Awards program Thursday, May 8, 2008, at 5 p.m. at the Wisconsin Union Theater in Memorial Union. The awards program is free and open to the public, with a reception and dinner to follow for which registration is requested by Wednesday, April 30. Details and registration are at www.uwalumni.com/daa .
A member of the Law School’s Class of 1953 and the Benchers Society, Sheldon Lubar is also a 1951 graduate of UW-Madison's School of Commerce. He is the founder of the Milwaukee investment firm Lubar & Co. and a former assistant secretary for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. He is also a former president of the UW System's Board of Regents.
Marianne Lubar has held prominent roles with the Milwaukee Public Library, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and UW-Milwaukee's Golda Meir Library.
In addition to Lubar Commons at the Law School, the couple endowed UW-Milwaukee's Lubar School of Business and UW-Madison's Lubar Institute for the Study of Abrahamic Religions. In 2007, they were contributors to the $85 million Wisconsin Naming Partnership at the Wisconsin School of Business.
The Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest honor bestowed by the Wisconsin Alumni Association. The award celebrates outstanding UW-Madison graduates whose professional achievements, contributions to society, and support of the university exemplify the Wisconsin Idea.
"Through their one-of-a-kind endeavors, these UW alumni are credited with some of the world's most innovative and important contributions," says Paula Bonner, the President and CEO of the Wisconsin Alumni Association. "We're proud to recognize them as part of the worldwide community of 370,000 passionate, inspired UW-Madison alumni."
