University of Wisconsin Law School students Melanie Black and Margaret Maffai have been named winners of the Association of Women Lawyers (AWL) scholarships for 2008, in recognition of outstanding academic achievement and significant contributions to the Law School community and community at large.

Maffai and Black will each receive a scholarship of $2,500. Both women have done extensive work in the spheres of combating human rights abuses and violence against women. Both have editorial positions on the Wisconsin International Law Journal in addition to numerous other honors and ongoing volunteer service commitments.

The Milwaukee-based AWL provides mentoring for new attorneys and engages in extensive pro bono work and community involvement. The Association awards two scholarships to outstanding women law students at Marquette University and the UW Law School each year.

Black and Maffai will receive their scholarships officially at the AWL annual meeting and awards luncheon in Milwaukee on September 23, 2008.
