The UW Law School’s newest clinical project, the Community Supervision Legal Assistance Project, or CSLAP (pronounced C-SLAP), under the direction of Clinical Professor Judith Olingy, has been awarded $50,000 in funding from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections to support the project’s work of providing legal advice and representation to individuals who are under corrections supervision in Dane County.
In 2007-08, the project’s first year, fifteen law students under Olingy’s supervision assisted clients with criminal law issues such as sentence credit and sentence modification; family law matters; housing and benefits questions; driver's license problems, and many other concerns.
The grant from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections (DOC) will support the work of CSLAP during the 2008-09 fiscal year.
Clinical Professor Meredith Ross, director of the Law School’s clinical Frank J. Remington Center, which houses CSLAP and numerous other projects, commented, "The DOC’s willingness to provide funding in tight fiscal times is a reflection of its increased emphasis on re-entry issues and public safety, and a tribute to the work of Judy and her students."
