The UW Law School brought home the Dean’s Cup trophy for the third year in a row this fall in the annual high-spirited competition between the Law School and School of Medicine and Public Health. The month-long event is a source of both camaraderie and funds for charitable organizations.
This is the first time in the 13-year history of the event that the Law School has won the trophy three years in a row.
All Law School proceeds from the numerous fund-raising events went to the Domestic Abuse Intervention Services in Madison.
Organizers of the competition were students Anthony Catalino, Matt Jalandoni, Paul Manrique, and Amber Stevenson.
In the opening events of the 2008 competition, which included bowling, ping-pong, spades, and chess, the medical students jumped out to an early 44-16 lead after all the points were tallied. The volleyball competition also was won by the medical students, who took first and second place.
During the second week of activities, the Law School achieved victories in flag football, softball, baking, soccer, and the 5-K run. As a result of these wins, Assistant Dean for Admissions Mike Hall fulfilled his Panda Promise, which required him to run the PILF-sponsored Race Judicata in a panda suit.
The Law School reclaimed the points-lead during the picnic at Rennebohm Park, sweeping arm wrestling, dodgeball, and tug of war. The Law School then sealed the 2008 Dean’s Cup victory during the last day of competition at the final event, basketball, at the Natatorium. With the women’s law teams taking first and second places, the men needed only to place in the top three in order to win the competition. The men’s second- place finish brought the final score to 155.6 for Law and 145.4 for Medicine.
Substantial funding for the event came from the Wisconsin Law Alumni Association (WLAA), which underwrote the costs for the fields, courts, and T-shirts.
