Professor Victoria Nourse of the University of Wisconsin Law School has been honored with the "Exemplary Legal Writing 2008" Award by Green Bag, a quarterly journal dedicated to good writing about the law, for her book In Reckless Hands: Skinner v. Oklahoma and the Near-Triumph of American Eugenics.
Nourse's book, published by W.W. Norton & Co. in 2008, is a comprehensive study that "reads like a cliffhanger" (Kirkus Reviews) of the history of American eugenics, when thousands of men and women were sterilized in the 1920s and 1930s at asylums and prisons across the country.
For Green Bag’s 2008 list of honorees, authors in five categories were selected by the journal's Board of Advisers, which includes distinguished members of state and federal judiciaries, private law firms, the news media, and academia.
Authors honored along with Nourse in the book category were Antonin Scalia and Bryan Garner, Charles Lane, and Benjamin Wittes.
The four other categories comprise Judicial Opinions, Short Articles, Long Articles, and Miscellany.
For a complete list of those honored and the titles of their work, see www.greenbag.org .
