The competition for the summer 2006 and Academic Year 2006-07 Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships is now open.The FLAS is open to graduate students who are US citizens or permanent residents and who are enrolled (or accepted for enrollment) in a program that combines modern foreign language training with international or area studies or with the international aspects of professional or other fields of study. FLAS fellowships provide a generous stipend (estimated at $15,000 for AY 2006-07), tuition remission, and benefits. Fellows are required to take one language course and one related area studies course each term. Summer FLAS fellowships are also available for intensive foreign language study. Application is made through an area studies office. Information about the area studies programs and the languages they support are available on the International Institute.
