Alta Charo chaired a joint workshop on ways to help patients avoid unproven, unsafe and ineffective stem cell treatments and to locate treatments and clinical trials most likely to lead to improvements or cures. Sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine, the meeting featured presentations by physicians, scientists, patient advocates, professional societies and regulatory experts.
