July 3-August 11, 2006 Application deadline is Feb. 17, 2006. Open to 1Ls and 2Ls. We will NOT have “rolling admissions” basis. This is a change from the earlier information. The Law School, in cooperation with Thammasat University Faculty of Law (Bangkok, Thailand), holds a summer internship program in Bangkok. The program provides a short time at Thammasat University for an introduction to Thai law, followed by about 6 weeks of work at an international law office in Bangkok. Up to four J.D. students are selected to participate. This program is open to 1L and 2L students. The internship does not pay a salary (although participants in the past have sometimes unexpectedly received a small bonus for their work). The estimated budget for the internship is about $2,250, of which the East Asian Legal Studies Center will award a support grant of at least $1,200. This grant provides money for transportation, some daily expenses in Bangkok, the administrative fee that Thammasat University charges, and the 2 months of mandatory health insurance required by the UW. Participants must have or get a passport to travel to Thailand and a visa. The Center will give information about these administrative details as soon as participants are selected. You do not need to speak Thai and you do not need previous travel experience to apply for this program. Articles from previous participants that give a good idea of the kinds of work that is assigned at the law firms as well as sightseeing experiences, etc., can be found in past Newsletters of the East Asian Legal Studies Center on line, www.law.wisc.edu/ealsc. They are also available at the Center office, room 4312 -- just stop by and pick one up. The application process is now open, with a deadline of February 17, 2005. Applications are available on the chair outside the Center office, room 4312 (on the 4th floor, east of the Atrium), and in the Atrium, here and there. To apply: Complete an application form. Put it with three other documents: 2) a cover letter addressed to Professor Charles Irish telling about yourself and why you are interested in participating in this program; 3) a copy of your resume, and 4) an official or unofficial Law School transcript. You can get either kind of transcript at the Peterson Bldg., or you can request an unofficial transcript sent to you by email at your "My Wisc" website as one of the links under "Academics." You can then print this out and include it with your application packet. Then give all four to the East Asian Legal Studies Center (either at the office, room 4312, or in the Center's mailbox). The deadline is February 17, 2006; acceptances will be made to qualified applicants as applications are received and reviewed. If you have questions, contact S. Katcher, skatcher@wisc.edu, Associate Director of the Center.
