Biography
Adam Stevenson joined the faculty of the University of Wisconsin Law School's Frank J. Remington Center in 2010, supervising the Oxford Federal Project and working with the Legal Assistance to Incarcerated People (LAIP) program. In the Oxford Federal Project, law students assist federal inmates at the Federal Correctional Institution in Oxford, WI with various postconviction issues, ranging from criminal to family law concerns. Through this experience, students learn to investigate, advise, and advocate for clients in a clinical setting. Students in the program also have the opportunity to participate in litigation in United States District Courts and the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.
In Fall 2013, Adam started the Federal Appeals Project, an expansion of the Oxford Federal Project that provides students the opportunity to litigate direct appeals in federal criminal cases. Students in the Federal Appeals Project litigate direct appeals from the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Students work in pairs on the cases, from record collection through briefing, and even have an opportunity to argue the cases before the Seventh Circuit.
Adam's research interests include federal sentencing and the United States Sentencing Guidelines. In particular, Adam's focus revolves around the use of prior convictions to enhance an individual's sentence. He also has researched methods of early release, including the 2014 expansion of the qualifications for federal clemency and the mechanisms created in 2009 Wisconsin Act 28, the 2009-2011 biannual state budget.
Previously, Adam worked as a Project Assistant in the Oxford Federal Project and the Legal Assistance to Institutionalized Persons (LAIP) program. Adam also interned for the Dane County Circuit Court and clerked for private practice firms engaged in criminal and civil litigation.
