Biography
Before joining the Legal Research & Writing Faculty at UW Law, Professor Ashby Kent Fox was an equity partner in the Commercial Litigation section of the Atlanta office of Burr & Forman LLP, where she practiced law for more than fourteen years. While at the firm, Professor Fox tried cases in Georgia's state and federal courts, and she served as lead counsel in a wide variety of business disputes, including cases alleging misappropriation of trade secrets, breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duties, defamation, fraud, negligence, unfair trade practices, and other business torts. Among other managerial positions that she held at the firm, Professor Fox served as a founder and leader of the firm's Women in Business Initiative, the goal of which was to provide guidance, resources, and business development opportunities to women in the firm and the Atlanta business community.
Professor Fox also proudly founded the firm's pro bono initiative with the Health Law Partnership ("HeLP") in 2008. Through this initiative, volunteer attorneys and staff members helped caregivers obtain legal guardianships over ill and/or disabled minors or incapacitated adults. The firm's partnership with HeLP was so successful that the firm's Atlanta office received the State Bar of Georgia's prestigious William B. Spann, Jr. public service award for this initiative in 2013.
While in practice, Professor Fox co-authored the annual Eleventh Circuit survey article entitled Trial Practice & Procedure for the Mercer Law Review each year from 2005-2016. This annual publication analyzed notable developments in the areas of civil procedure, evidence, statutory interpretation, and civil trial practice in the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals.
Prior to joining UW Law, Professor Fox taught the Pretrial Litigation course at Emory University School of Law, and served for several years on faculty for Emory Law's Kessler-Eidson Program for Trial Techniques ("KEPTT"). KEPTT is an intensive trial training program for second-year law students, which is modeled after the National Institute for Trial Advocacy's program and is aimed at integrating students' substantive evidentiary knowledge with practical trial skills.
Professor Fox earned her law degree, with honors, from Emory University School of Law in 2003. As a law student, she led several student organizations and served as the Notes and Comments Editor of the Emory International Law Review. Professor Fox earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Vanderbilt University in 2000. She graduated magna cum laude and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. She is admitted to practice in Georgia and Wisconsin.
Professor Fox proudly serves as the faculty advisor for the Wisconsin Journal of Law, Gender & Society.
