Biography

Nick Heitman is an accomplished prosecutor with more than 17 years of experience in criminal law and public service. He currently serves as an Assistant Attorney General with the Wisconsin Department of Justice, where he prosecutes financial crimes and other complex matters. Nick also works with various governmental agencies, including the Departments of Revenue, Health Services, and Safety and Professional Services, to investigate and prosecute potential violations involving those agencies.

Prior to joining the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Nick served in the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office, where he was a member of the office’s Public Integrity Unit. In that role, he oversaw the investigation and prosecution of complex financial crimes, public corruption, misconduct in public office, organized crime, campaign finance violations, and cases involving elected officials and other public figures.

Nick began his career with the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office in the Domestic Violence Unit, where he ultimately became the head of the unit. During his time there, he prosecuted a wide range of cases involving family and intimate partner violence, including child sexual assault, disorderly conduct, stalking, first-degree attempted homicide, and numerous other serious offenses.

In this role, Nick was a founding member of the Milwaukee County Domestic Abuse High Risk Team, a multidisciplinary group consisting of domestic abuse victim advocates, law enforcement officers, prosecutors, and other professionals. The team reviews the most lethal domestic violence cases to identify intervention strategies and help prevent domestic violence-related homicides.

Nick was also a founding member of the National Association of Prosecuting Attorneys Domestic Violence Committee, a committee comprised of experienced prosecutors and advocates from more than 30 jurisdictions dedicated to sharing best practices, refining prosecution strategies, and advancing the field through peer-driven collaboration.

Throughout his career, Nick has trained law enforcement officers on investigative techniques involving evidence collection, stalking, witness intimidation, and other critical areas of criminal investigation. He has presented locally, statewide, and nationally on topics including evidence, ethics, and constitutional issues.

Nick has tried more than 100 jury trials involving a broad spectrum of serious felony offenses, including attempted homicide of law enforcement officers, sexual assault, arson, shootings, witness intimidation, misconduct by public officials, police misconduct, racketeering, and other organized crime-related offenses.

In 2024, Nick was named the Wisconsin District Attorneys Association Assistant District Attorney of the Year.
