Biography
Bonnie Shucha is the Associate Dean for Library and Information Services and Director of the Law Library at the UW Law School. She received her J.D. from the UW Law School, a Masters of Library & Information Science and M.A. in History from UW-Milwaukee, and a B.A. in History from UW-Eau Claire.
Dean Shucha has presented and published on numerous topics including legal research, legal technology and generative AI, scholarly visibility, tribal law, and women’s history. She is also the creator and author of the UW Law Library blog, WisBlawg, which provides legal research and tech information with an emphasis on Wisconsin.
She is an active member of the American Association of Law Libraries where she served as chair of several special interest sections. She is also a past president of the Law Librarians Association of Wisconsin. She is a member and former chair of the State Bar of Wisconsin’s Communications Committee and Wisconsin Lawyer editorial board.
Dean Shucha teaches Advanced Legal Research. In this simulation course, students gain practical, hands-on experience in approaching, conducting, and presenting research in a practice setting.

Bonnie Shucha presented "Ethical and Practical Applications of AI in Legal Research" during the 2024 Technology and the Bench Seminar hosted by the Wisconsin Office of Judicial Education on June 13, 2024.
Bonnie Shucha presented "Artificial Intelligence Research, Practice and Policy in Higher Education" during the National Association of System Heads panel on Nov. 30, 2023.
Bonnie Shucha presented "Increasing Awareness of and Access to Tribal Law" during the 2023 American Association of Law Libraries Legislative Advocacy Training on Dec. 4, 2023.
Bonnie Shucha coordinated and spoke during "Recognizing the Third Sovereign: Promoting Awareness of, Respect for and Access to Native American Tribal Law," which took place during the American Association of Law Libraries Annual Meeting in Boston on July 17, 2023.
Bonnie Shucha and Liz Manriquez presented on "Increasing Library Impact by Promoting Faculty Scholarly Impact" for the American Association of Law Libraries on July 18, 2022. Shucha and Manriquez participated in a panel discussion on how law librarians can help faculty discover and increase the impact of their scholarship, and in doing so, increase the library's impact by evolving and expanding their scholarly visibility programs.
Bonnie Shucha received the Paul Gatz Publication Award from the American Association of Law Libraries, Research Instruction and Patron Services SIS during a business meeting on May 31, 2022. This award, which recognizes excellence in writing by a law librarian, was presented to Shucha for her article, "Representing Law Faculty Scholarly Impact."
Bonnie Shucha received the Outstanding Article Award from the American Association of Law Libraries, Academic Law Libraries Special Interest Section on April 29, 2022. The award recognizes contributions to the enhancement of academic law librarianship through publishing. The award-winning article is "Representing Law Faculty Scholarly Impact: Strategies for Improving Citation Metrics Accuracy and Promoting Scholarly Visibility," 40 Legal Reference Services Quarterly 81 (October 2021). Bonnie Shucha presented "Law Faculty Scholarly Impact: Strategies for Improving Citation Metrics Accuracy and Promoting Scholarly Visibility" at the Yale Law School Virtual Symposium on Citation and the Law in April.
In May 2020, Bonnie Shucha co-presented "New Possibilities for Sociolegal Scholars: Hein, ORCID and Your Scholarly Profile" for the Law and Society Association's Annual Meeting. The presentation was part of a session titled "Getting Sociolegal Scholarship Cited and Recognized: New Possibilities and Perils Organized by the LSA Task Force on Sociolegal Metrics."
Bonnie Shucha participated on a panel at the January 2020 AALS Annual Meeting titled "Measuring Scholarly Impact: Are Citation Metrics the Right Fit for Law Schools?" Others on the panel included Shane Marmion, president of William S. Hein & Co., Gregory Mitchell, University of Virginia School of Law, and Gregory Sisk, University of St. Thomas School of Law.
