Biography
Cary directs the Family Legal Advocacy and Supports Clinic (FLASC), where she works with both law students and social work students in providing legal and non-legal services to families at risk of formal involvement with the child welfare system. Law students provide one-on-one limited services to many and direct family law representation to a few clients during their time with the clinic, while social work students assist clients with non-legal needs, all with the goal of helping to stabilize the family.
Before joining the law school, Cary worked in the Wisconsin State Public Defender's appellate division, where she litigated appeals in criminal cases, termination of parental rights cases, juvenile cases, and mental health commitments. During her time there, she argued 2 cases before the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Cary also has prior family law experience, having practiced family law at Community Justice Inc., a non-profit law firm that provides reduced-fee legal representation to low income families. She now serves on Community Justice Inc.'s board of directors.
Cary received her J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School, where she was a Law In Action Research Fellow and served on the executive board of the Wisconsin Law Review. After graduating, Cary clerked for the Honorable Lynn Adelman in the Eastern District of Wisconsin.
